Our Story

mission

Footsteps Christian Preschool was birthed in 2001 in Plettenberg Bay in a Wendy house in the back garden of Kim Matter’s home on High Street as a Mom’s and babies group, known as Tots Academy.

In January 2006 the need for a preschool was realized and a house was rented in Rugby Drive.

Sally Button joined Kim as a teacher, Colette Goedhals as Administrator and Evelyn Mojapelo as a helper to the teacher’s and cleaner. The school started with 13 students between the ages of 2 and 3 years old.

By the end of 2007 the school had grown to such an extent that the need for a new premises arose.  A suitable house was found on Longships Drive and school commenced from there in January 2008 with 37 children.  By that time two teachers, Rhona Bebington and Claire Badenhorst had been added to the staff. In November of that year the property was sold and we had to go! It was then that Kim approached the Plett Community Church requesting the use of their skate park which had been closed and the land was not being utilized.

During December 2008 and the early part of January 2009 the current school was constructed

in time for us to open in the new school year.  The school has been designed around our needs consisting of 6 classrooms, an office, kitchen, boys and girls toilets, an ‘imaginary play’ area and store rooms.

We have a large play ground area with jungle gyms and plenty of cement to ride bicycles and play ball games on.

In September 2009 the school added an aftercare option for the children of the school whose parents were not able to collect them by 12:30.

Due to the great demand we have changed our entry age into school from 24 to 18 months and

we love looking after these busy bodies in the Fishies class!

In 2014 we were blessed with an Afrikaans teacher, Maryka Westraadt, and we introduced a combined age Afrikaans class.  At the beginning of 2015 we welcomed Nicky Sankey to our staff and a new, larger class was added onto the school to accommodate our Grade R Ellies class.

At the end of 2015 we said a sad goodbye to Aunty Sally(after 10 years of loyal service) and in 2016 we welcomed Hilary Bailey to the staff.  At the end of 2016 we said also said farewell to Claire Badenhorst and welcomed Deidre Pollard as our new Grade R Ellies class teacher.

2018 Brings new opportunities and reshuffling with Aunty Kate and Aunty Collette saying good-bye at the end of 2017. We wish them the best.

Our Footsteps moms and babies class – ‘Tots’, with Kim, still delights all the new babies in Plett and it feeds into the Fishies Class!

We have Kim Matter as our principal and a permanent staff of 10. We regularly host student teachers and volunteers, giving them the inputs they need to develop their potential.
